This unit focuses on pronunciation and phonology. Understanding how sounds are produced in English is important for students. However, just as important are how the sounds are put together to create meaning. Practicing with intonation and stresses found within the English language are key for student success. A few ways to teach stress include: contrastive stress, by gestures, choral work, the board, and stress marks. The international Phonemic Alphabet is an essential tool for teachers because it provides a guide for pronunciation that applies to any variation of English (British, Australian, and American). Another useful tool for teaching pronunciation is making students aware of how sounds are produced within the mouth. This can be done by using diagrams and having students make sounds and consciously make note of how those sounds are being produced. Student talk time during lessons is required for students to be able to practice their pronunciation.
