Pre-teaching is powerful tool that can work across the entire skill range of teaching English. It allows for incremental building towards understanding and mastering more abstract structures and grammar concepts in the language. When using authentic and non authentic texts to introduce potentially problematic concepts, significant care should be taken to find topics that are accessible to the student but that also leads their responses towards something the teacher can understand and build on. If I were to ask about Korean history, for example, there is very real risk that their responses would be correct, but I wouldn't understand the actuality behind it. There has to be a medium between content that engages students that the teacher has a mastery over.
