I found this to be the most difficult unit so far, as I had never encountered an academic situation related to the uses of phrasal verbs and particulary the passive voice.
I this unit I learned how different modal auxillary verbs and forms are used to convey degrees of formality and urgency in speech. The spreadsheet table on pages 2 and 3 was particulary useful in learning this.
The passive voice was an interesting concept, paticulary as it can be used to communicate that the speaker does not know a subject within a sentence, but also that it can be used to deflect blame or soften a sentence if the topic is awkward or may cause offence to someone.
