This unit explained the many types of tests associated with an English learning course. A placement test is used to determine a student's existing level of proficiency and for placing the student in the appropriate level course. The diagnostic test is used at the beginning of a course to assess the current level and knowledge of the students in the class. A progress test is given periodically through the course to assess what knowledge has been retained and what should be focused on to help the students. Sometimes, students will want to take a formal examination outside of the classroom, to obtain a necessary certification. The students will use practice exams to study for these external examinations.
