Unit 11 introduces the two receptive skills needed in language, reading and listening. Both are equally important. There are two general motives for reading and listening: for a purpose and for entertainment. Furthermore, there are many ways that we read and listen. For example, sometimes we may just scan a newspaper or podcast for a certain piece of information we are looking for. Other times, we read or listen in order to completely understand the information, like if you are learning a new language! There are different ways to make the reading and listening more effective. These can include choosing topics that are of interest to the students, pre-teaching any difficult vocabulary they may encounter, and also creating interest and engaging the students.
