Phonology is the whole sound system. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch in a sentence. Intonation is particularly important in questioning, agreeing or disagreeing or confirming statements as it carries the message in a sentence. It is also fundamental in the expression of emotions or feelings.
Some techniques for indicating and teaching intonations are nonsense words, gesture, humming or singing and making marks on the board.
Techniques for indicating and teaching stress are contrastive stress, gesture, choral work, making marks on the board like underlining or stress marks.
Teaching of pronunciation can be done in the whole lesson, as a slot lesson or as and when required.
