I see that so much of the Reported Speech structure depends on context. For example, question #18 above could be answered with response #1 if the report was immediately after Kate asked the question. However, response #3 would be appropriate if the report was long after the conversation between Kate and John had taken place. But given the very brief context provided, it's difficult even for a native speaker of English to know for sure. Regarding the conditionals also presented in the unit, it's very interesting to now know the rules behind what seems rather intuitive. That will definitely help me to teach this concept in a structured and (hopefully) logical manner.
