This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In contrast to Unit 11, Unit 12 presents the teaching of the productive skills of speaking and writing. I appreciative the idea presented that writing is about accuracy and speaking is more about fluency, and that writing skills are often neglected in the classroom. The idea of each student having a need to say something or listen to something when communicating is important because it implies the most difficult aspect of teaching EFL which is motivating students to learn. Unit 12 lists various speaking activities with differing levels of oversight and then presents a model ESA lesson on free speaking followed by guidelines for such a lesson. Next, in the section on writing, we are given special considerations such as the need for spelling, handwriting/penmanship, formality, layout, and punctuation. Lastly, there is a section on games listing cooperative and competitive as the two broad categories and with these are linguistic and communicative games.
