The examples of lesson materials provided has really gotten ideas flowing for how to develop material that is engaging, topical, and interesting to students. In Chinese language classes I have taken in the past, my teachers relied predominately on the textbook. I believe this was because there was a lot of pressure from the department to finish the textbook before the end of the course. This made lessons less engaging and limited our ability to develop confidence and fluency in the language because all the material was tailored to our needs and was not authentic. However, from this I can also see the limitations teachers may face in terms of selecting materials and designing exciting lessons in the way we would like. Learning to work effectively within our limitations is perhaps one of the most important parts of choosing material for an English class.
