This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In conclusion, class management plays an important role in language teaching. Teachers need to consider a number of aspects which probably affect classes proceeding. During the teaching, teachers should know how to use eye contact to show all the students are involved in the lesson, how to use gestures to convey the messages, and how to use variant voice to improve the effectiveness. Also, teachers can group students according to the type of activity and class size: whole-class grouping, group work, pair work and individual work. All the groupings can be mixed up in activities and it can create as much variety as possible. At the same time, different seating arrangements have their own advantages and disadvantages. There are three common seating arrangements: orderly rows, circles and horseshoes, and separate tables. There are some other class arrangement issues we need to consider: writing on the board, giving individual attention, low teacher talking time, giving instructions, establishing rapport and maintaining disciplines. I gain a lot from this unit learning and I think the key to having a good classroom management is that teachers should strike a balance between exercising control and encouraging a relaxed atmosphere conducive to learning in classes.
