I have been teaching for 8 years now and my experience with classroom management comes down to expectations. If a teacher is clear with their expectations at the beginning of the year and follows those same expectations throughout the course of the year, students will recognize the structure and adherence to the basic rules by the teacher and understand how their behavior should be modeled.
Despite clear expectations, there will always be instances that require an extra level of classroom management and that is where a teacher must have a reliable strategy to deal with the unwanted behavior. I personally strive to have conversations with the students outside of the classroom to avoid any embarrassment for both of us and to talk to the student in a calmly manner so as not to aggravate the situation.
