This unit covered the basics of teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills involve two parts: reading and listening. Some issues that may arise when teaching in these areas can be with the content of reading material or how effectively the students can grasp the teachers words when listening to a lesson. To avoid these problems a solution is to choose reading or listening material that interests the class because the students will be more engaged with the topic. A teacher should also pre-teach vocabulary to ensure the students understand the written/spoken material. This unit also stressed the importance of comprehension from the students. Tasks should be made to encourage understanding not to merely check if the students understood. For example using jigsaw reading or jumbled stories. Different examples of how these lessons apply to the ?ESA? method were displayed towards the end of the unit.
