This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit provided an overview of receptive skills, which are reading and listening. The unit clearly and concisely explains the different ways we might read or listen for different purposes. This lesson also emphasizes that context and pre-existing knowledge influence our understanding of a text or audio excerpt and that non-native English speakers may not pick this up at first. A couple of teaching strategies are provided as examples of ways to ease confusion with listening and reading tasks. These strategies included pre-teaching complex vocabulary, choosing a topic that students are likely to be interested in, and picking text/audio that is suited to the students' learning level. It is also important to note that listening is more difficult for English students than reading is, as reading allows for students to re-read, go at their own pace, and visualize word breaks. Listening, on the other hand, is much quicker and confusing. Both tasks are helpful when teaching receptive skills.
