This unit focuses on teaching receptive skills, which includes reading and listening. People typically read either for a purpose or for entertainment. Some reading skills include: predictive reading, scanning, skimming, reading for detailed information, and deductive reading from a text. Various aspects of teaching receptive skills can be problematic, for which it is very important that the teacher chooses material that will interest the students and is suitable to their level of understanding, pre-teaches any difficult vocabulary from the text, and uses comprehension tasks to see if the students have understood the material.
I found this unit useful for understanding more in depth the methods a teacher can use for teaching receptive skills and also the example exercises and lesson plans that were shown.
