There are a number of ways to assess a students' language level: with tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests.
Tutorials- reviewing the work done, discussing the aims of the lesson or how well the students performed the task, etc.
Evaluation by the students - helps you understand better how they react to what you do.
Tests: placements, progress, diagnostic, practice tests and external exams.
At the start of the course you may give a placements test to assist the formation of groups.
Periodic progress tests can be in a form of a formal written test or a group activity as long as it notifies you and the students of the progress.
Diagnostic tests are similar in content to placements test but sometimes more extensive.
Practice tests should follow the format and structure of the external examination that they are being given in preparation for.
General external examinations: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC.
