This unit deals with coursebooks and lesson materials, how teachers can teach using these materials. As regards materials available to use in the classroom there are two types: authentic and created. Authentic materials are materials such as movies, newspaper articles, radio programs, menus, etc. They are real and therefore more interesting and motivating for students, although hey are not created for a specific teaching purpose, so teachers need to be careful in selecting which material would be appropriate for the students. Created materials can be crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, picture stories, etc, they are usually designed by the teacher and therefore can be graded according to the students level of English.
The advantages of using a coursebook are: usually they provide a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work; it is usually attractive and appealing to the eye; it contunually practices language items previously introduced; the syllable is graded to a level suitable for the students, etc. The disadvantages are: it doesn not always the needs and interests of the students; it can become very predictable and boring for the students; it can make teachers lazy; etc.
