This unit dealt with the use of course books and materials in the classroom. I learned that there are advantages and disadvantages to using course books. Some advantages being that it is quicker than creating your own lessons from scratch, that students expect some sort of text book and that they are set for each level. This is especially good for new and inexperienced teachers. Some disadvantages: they may become too boring if overused, they can't possibly cover all the needs and interests of each class, and the book tends to dictate what is taught. Also covered were the various materials used in class. These can be divided into authentic and created. Authentic matterials carry the advantage of being from \"real life\" and may students see this as interesting and valuable, but created materials can be better for teaching to a specific level or skill. Both have their place and uses. In general, the use of text books and teacher created materials can ensure that what is taught in the classroom is balanced and interesting for all levels of learners from different cultural backgrounds. This is because the teacher can supliment or adapt what the books teach with what is needed for that specific class.
