This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Before I delved into this unit, I believed I had a firm grasp on what teaching methods would be beneficial and what would be detrimental to students. That a teacher should be encouraging and kind to their students, rather than constantly correct them and bring down their morale. The two sample lessons provided in this unit confirmed that. These videos also provided me an opportunity to view a lesson from an outsider's perspective, which helped to highlight why the first lesson did not work as well as the second lesson. For example, in the first lesson the teacher went straight to requesting that students provide modal auxiliary verbs without fully explaining what they are. In that lesson, the teacher intimidated his class and gave the impression that he believed his students to be unintelligent. In comparison, the teacher gave the impression in the second lesson that he felt that his students were doing well. Seeing these obvious differences in the students' reactions to the teacher's methods drove home what kind of teacher I want to be.
