This unit challenged the notion that course books are always utilized throughout the teaching process. This unit challenged me to think carefully about the potential advantages and disadvantages of using course books and their supplemental materials. While course books can provide structure and are intended to build skills in a methodical progression over time, the material is not individualized for specific populations. For example, as a teacher, I may be working with a group of Chinese students whose specific cultural and language needs are not thoroughly attended to and addressed in generic course material. There is much opportunity for teachers to be creative and thoughtful and develop materials, games, worksheets, and activities for their students. These created materials can target the students' specific needs, interests, and areas of weakness. In general, it seems that the recommendation is to incorporate course books and created materials into one's lessons and to strive to make lessons interesting, relevant, challenging, and fun.
