This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit was about the productive language skills of speaking and listening. It covered each skill separately. In speaking, the unit went over the two main purposes for communicating--when there is a desire or need to do so. The unit also gave typical reasons why students may be reluctant or hesitant to speak and what teachers can do to motivate students to speak and participate. The unit also looked at the differences between accuracy focused and fluency focused activities and how this can be practiced in controlled practice, guided practice, and creative practice activities and how these type of activities can be incorporated into the Engage Study Activate type of lesson plans. In writing, the unit covered the various areas of writing, such as handwriting, spelling, writing conventions, punctuation, etc. that may be very foreign to new English language learners. The unit gave helpful suggestions for encouraging students to practice their writing skills. It also gave some suggestions for using games to promote writing skills.
