Authentic and created materials each have strengths that can help students progress in the language. Knowing the students, their experience and background can help determine where to begin. Using a textbook as a curriculum guide can be a \"safe\" way to teach but can also be a lifeless and inappropriate guide for a particular group of students. Using the textbook in conjunction with other sources to supplement the appropriate textbook activities can be a win win situation for the student. When using the best of both methods, authentic and created materials the teacher can fill-in gaps left by the textbook and enrich the textbook with the created materials. in searching for the best course book it is important to examine its use of ESA style. Is there a good balance between the levels of study and activation? Can created activities be easily incorporated into the lessons of the chosen textbook? There are advantages and disadvantages of each. Instructors must have the familiarity with those styles and the students' needs to best serve their students.
