This unit explores the many different methods of evaluation and testing, which can be facilitated by both the teacher and the individual student and which are used to provide an indication of a student's language abilities. Evaluation can take three forms: tutorials (both one-on-one and as a group), student evaluation of the course (with a questionnaire or discussion), and a variety of tests. Some teachers believe that they can evaluate their students' English level and learning progress by observing them in class alone. However, testing is generally seen as an effective and at times compulsory (depending on the institution) way of determining a student's language level. There are many types of testing available, which are designed for a variety of purposes and motivations, cater to different levels of language ability, and test several or all language skills. These tests include: placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, achievement tests, practice tests, and external examinations (such as proficiency tests and the Cambridge Assessment).
