This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Course books are an important part of teaching, but should not be used alone. While course books do provide many advantages for teachers and students, they can become boring if used as the only source of teaching. Course books should always be evaluated by the teacher for effectiveness in their classroom. Some of the elements that should be examined are: design, methodology (Does this fit with the ESA lesson format?), skills, difficulty, topics, and included materials. Lessons should be supplemented with authentic materials (anything a native speaker will hear or read) and/or created materials (materials created by the teacher). The use of authentic materials will increase student interest and build confidence when they master it. Created materials can be targeted specifically to your students? level and interests. In my experience, I have found that course books provide a good outline of what should be taught at what point in the course, but if used as the only source of language learning, students will not be as motivated to learn.
