This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit gave us two very different examples of lessons, one of which was extremely ineffective and one of which was effective and actually helped the students to both learn new vocabulary and verb use, but also intrigued the students and inspired participation and likely retention of the new material. The first lesson was weakly organized, completely teacher-centered, and lacked clarity and encouragement-- the students failed to learn from the lesson and seemed fearful and confused. In the second lesson, the instructor arrived with a positive attitude and immediately set to involving his students in the class and making a student-centered lecture. He clearly explained the purpose of the lesson and each activity (although he could have better explained his Activate phase). We saw that students in the second lesson responded positively and seemed to learn from the lesson. This unit shows us that while student-centered teaching is absolutely important and necessary, the attitude of the teacher sets the tone for the lesson.
