Seating arrangements can affect the ambiance of an entire class, and has to be carefully considerate of each student's study habits, strengths/weaknesses, as well as personalities. It is also important to have the seating arrangement reflect the focus of the classroom (the teacher/the whiteboard) in order to encourage focus and listening skills.
I think one of the most effective seating arrangements (if possible, due to class size) is the horseshoe. The teacher has the best view of students in groups or individually, for monitoring during group or individual activities. The focus is automatically facing the front of the room, towards the teacher or the whiteboard. It also puts the students on even-footing, as they can make eye contact with each other which is an effective way to foster student talk time (within the parameters of a lesson). It is also easier to establish a solid rapport with students, as the classroom feels close-knit and personal. All of these factors contribute to a happy classroom and fun learning environment!
