This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
An English class can have a variety of students of different ages, educational levels or experience. Some may be an absolute beginner who has no knowledge of English, an adult who is most likely to be self-driven, a child who lacks motivation but can grasp the language faster, it can be a classroom of students or an individual learner, it can be a business person seeking to learn English to benefit his/her job or it can be someone who is monolingual or multilingual. Whatever the category, the teacher must adapt his/her lesson to tailor the needs of the student.
When teaching children for example, the teacher must cater for their curiosity and interest. Creating an attractive classroom decorated with colorful posters and charts is one way to achieve this. Teaching a single student reaps the benefit of personalized attention but hampers certain activities such as group activities. A class of business clients on the other hand comes with the challenges of low attendance and low concentration as students may be tired from working all day and busy with work to fully commit. One way to assist in identifying the objectives of the students is to provide a needs analysis so the teacher knows which areas to focus on.
