This unit is helpful because it mentions the ways that people read and listen. These ways include predictive skills, scanning, skimming, for detailed information and deduction from context. It is important for teachers to pre-teach the words that are essential to understanding and leaving other vocabulary for a later time. This unit also mentions that authentic texts are not designed for language students. It is better to use non-authentic texts when teaching receptive skills to beginning or mid-level ESL students.
