Unit 11 covers teaching receptive skills: reading and listening. The teacher must help the student use their eyes and ears as gateways to their mind where understanding will be generated. Of course, the easiest way to motivate a student is to find something to which he/she can relate and holds interest for him/her. It is obvious a skillful teacher can take almost anything and develop a lesson that will improve the student's understanding of the language.
This lesson reminded me of an experience when I was taking Spanish. One of the suggestions my teacher gave was to tune into a radio station where Spanish is being spoken and listen even though I did not understand most of what was being said. Just listening helps one begin to feel the flow and inflection of the language. It makes sense as that is one way a baby learns his native language.
