Reading and listening are receptive skills which must be taught alongside the productive skills of writing and speaking. When teaching reading skills, teachers should choose texts that would be of interest to the students, and make sure they are not too easy or too hard. It is often helpful to pre-teach the vocabulary that students will encounter. When teaching listening skills, teachers can play recorded music, video clips etc to give students the opportunity to listen to English being used in context. In these situations, it is important that teachers note that students of English often have difficulty understanding a variety of accents.
