Unit 11 is about receptive skills (reading and listening) and how to teach them. The reasons receptive skills are used can be divided into two broad categories. The first is for a purpose which includes needing to understand valuable information to meet goals. The second reason is for entertainment such as understanding jokes, song lyrics, and conversations in films. There are numerous ways that people use their receptive skills. This includes making predictions about passages based off of their headlines or introductions, scanning for specific information, skimming for general ideas, reading or listening to all details to understand something, and the ability to make deductions from context. These concepts may be difficult for students as they are learning English but a teacher should remain prepared. The teacher can do this by pre-teaching vocabulary from the lesson, carefully selecting non-authentic texts, choose interesting topics, and provide comprehension tasks that promote understanding.
