This unit covers various types of testing and assessment that many students of English will see, both in and out of the classroom. The first section covers the importance of assessment and various ways that teachers can use it. Placement tests are useful for grouping students by proficiency, diagnostic tests are good to use before a unit or term to see what students already know, progress tests can track what has been retained by the students, and larger exams may be used at the end of a unit or term to check knowledge on larger ranges of material already covered. Practice tests are good preparation for external exams, which students may take if they are moving to an English speaking country for work or study, or to get a specific job.
