The content of this Unit focusses on different ways of presenting a new language via teaching vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as language functions in an approriate balance.
Students have to be exposed to the language as well as understand its meaning and structure. However, for students beeing able to practice the language and produce it on their own is a crucial factor for successful lessons.
Lessons can contain both, vocabulary and grammatical explanations, but to avoid confusion it may be a better decision to focus on just one area per lesson.
According to the language the teacher wants to instruct, an appropriate lesson structure (straigh arrow approach, boomerang or patchwork ESA ...) has to be adjusted. For example, when planning to teach vocabulary, a straight arrow approach may make more sense than boomerang ESA, which is on the other hand more suitable for functions-based lessons.
In the end, a teacher must be creative and think about which structure is the most appropriate for the class.
