The unit presented a historical overview of teaching methodologies that have been employed over the past few centuries of teaching English, culminating in the preferred Engage, Activate and Study (ESA) methodology. Each of these steps were described in the context of lesson planning, with useful techniques being introduced geared to different levels of proficiency among learners, as well as guidelines for proper usage of correction and feedback. The unit emphasized the need for learners to actively put language into practice as part of the learning experience, and was useful in showing how this can be realized through effective lesson planning -- whether in the straight ESA arrow model, the boomerang model (e.g., EASA), or the patchwork model (E(...)A).
