Listening, reading, writing and speaking are the four basic components of learning a new language. Utilizing these four areas in a balanced manner when planning lessons is best practice. Listening and reading are usually grouped together as \"receptive\" skills and writing and speaking are grouped as \"productive skills. Ther are fine points in both sets of skills, which the teacher can bring out through good lesson planning and paying attention to students interests and language levels. Providing context and pre-learning lessons, along with interesting content, will allow for the students to soak in their new language easier, both in a general and in-depth manner.
