This section addressed the types of materials that may be available to teachers to support their students' learning including both authentic materials and created materials, particularly textbooks. While textbooks are often quite helpful for new teachers because they provide a clear syllabus and offer students a noticeable progression through content, they can be boring and hard to relate to because they are designed for use by a wide audience rather than a specific group of students and they can quickly become dated. Authentic materials are any material that would be used in real life by native speakers, such as newspapers, advertisments, menus, etc. They are great resources for intermediate and advanced students, but can be too difficult for beginners to use effectively. A good teacher generally uses both types of material to suit the needs of her students.
