There are two types of materials that can be used to create a lesson - authentic material and created material. Authentic material is anything that a native speaker would hear or read. It is used for higher level students who are preparing to take on the real world. Created material is usually designed by the teacher or taken from a course book. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but it is always wise to incorporate interesting ideas or concepts that are appropriate to the students. Following the lesson straight from the book is often dull and leads kids to boredom. However, created material is ideal for inexperienced teachers as it provides a proven syllabus that has been tried over and over again.
