This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Coursebooks provide a tested syllabus for a teacher to adapt and are usually designed for a particular student level, but very often course instructors need to adjust the contents to be covered and produce their own materials to cater for the needs and interests of students. The four approaches for coursebook use(omit, replace, supplement, adapt) listed in this unit are exactly what I have been practising: I use textbooks in tandem with my own created supplements. Normally for each of my lesson, I make my own class notes in powerpoints for presentation and hard copies for students based on the knowledge picked from the textbook with corresponding practice exercises for study phase. It has been shown effective results in regard to students' learning process but students will normally merely depend on the notes without deeper investigation into the textbook, which could ultimately hinder their self-acquisition process and prevent them from being self-reliant. What I really need to improve in the future is that I need to consider using more authentic materials (newspaper, documentaries) as a prompt to create motivations and interests.
