This unit was about getting students to use their receptive skills (listening and/or reading). Students do not have to know every word in a passage to make sense of what is being said. Sometimes the context in which an unknown word is used also gives meaning to the word. Therefore, the student can derive meaning by thinking about the context in which certain words are used.This unit introduced a variety of methods that have been used to teach lessons, however one particular methods is stressed. In the ESA method, students are engaged, introduced to a language concept and then have a chance to use the new information. This unit had many activities as well as ways to help students overcome errors and understand how their work is being graded.
