Unit 13 deals with the teaching of pronunciation. This lesson was extremely informative and mostly new information for me, especially the details about the IPA and specific areas of articulation. The information about voiced and unvoiced consonants ('this' vs. 'think') was particularly surprising. I remain slightly skeptical about the more nuanced differences between British and American English in the IPA, and will do some follow-up investigating as to what my students are reading in their dictionaries (especially concerning vowels). This lesson has given me a lot to think about and work with, even as early as tomorrow morning. I have also looked into ordering Elements of Pronunciation and the Headway Pronunciation series.
