This unit was about evaluation and testing. I learned that there are many more external English exams than I realized. It is important for a teacher to be aware of which exams their students may be preparing for, so they know how to prepare them. I learned the difference between a placement test and a diagnostic test. I also learned that an interview is often part of a placement test. This is useful because it will give the giver of the exam a good idea of the person's spoken English - which may be different from their reading or listening ability. Using assessments is a good way to keep students in courses with students of similar levels as well as providing students a general idea of their level so they can track their progress.
