During this unit, I had difficulties to connect direct speech to reported speech. Some rules from present simple to past simple seemed incoherent. But I finally understood that when we change present simple to past simple, it is because a time gap more or less important separates an action (direct speech) from its report (the reported speech). And it is the same for all tenses excepted for past perfect and past perfect continuous.To get students speaking without any sort of controlled activity can be quite a challenge, the same for writing. They need models, vocabulary and motivation. It never has crossed to my minde before that handwriting is something I should mind about. I had some students with horrible handwritinh and I just ended up good at translating them, this is something I'll be more careful from now on. This unit was very clarifying and helpful.
