We covered the use of resources, whether authentic or created, and the use of course books. Each type of resource has its own advantages and disadvantages. Authentic materials, for instance, tend to be more interesting and build confidence in the students that they are actually learning the language. However, because they are not graded, they can easily be outside the students' capabilities, and must be selected with care. Similarly, course books can quickly provide structure and balance to a program, but run the risk of being predictable, out of date and boring. It is essential that, regardless of what materials are used, the teacher remains engaged in the program and regularly evaluates their effectiveness supplementing when needed.
