The past tense is quite similar to present tense in system and structure. All forms feature some form of verb. Continuous forms feature “to be†plus the -ing form of the verb, perfect forms feature “to have†plus the past participle form of the verb while as perfect continuous forms feature “to have†plus the -ing form.
In regular past simple form we simply ad –ed or –d to the verb while as in irregular verbs spellings get changed. It is used at a definite time in the past. In past continuous, auxiliary verb like was/were are used along with – ing form of verb. Past perfect uses had or had not along with past participle form of verb. They represent actions that occurred before other actions in the past.
