This unit discusses teaching productive skills, which is to say speaking and writing. With speaking, it is important to practice both accuracy and fluency. Usually, accuracy is practiced in the 'study' phase of an ESA lesson, while fluency would be practiced in the activate phase where students are being more creative and experimental with their language. For teaching writing, it is important to proper spelling, which in English regularly does not line up phonetically with the spoken language, as well as the layout and punctuation of written English, and legible handwriting. As with any other aspect of studying language, students will be much more interested in practicing writing if the topic is interesting and the prompt allows them to be creative.
