This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have lived ten years in Cambodia and speak fluent Khmer, and I have used it in the classroom. It took several times stressing the fact during this course for me to begin to see that it is possible to teach English without using the L1 at all. What finally made me realize was the multilingual class. If you are teaching ESL at a college to students who came from all around the world that would be the only option. I also found it interesting that the teacher doesn't need to have esoteric knowledge for a special group of students. They are already working in their field and our goal is not to teach them the field but to learn English. I also have always assumed that 1 to 1 tutoring was the best, but this unit showed me there are pros and cons to each.
