Unit 7 focused on teaching receptive skills. It first identified the 4 basic skills in any language, which are receptive- reading and listening, and productive- speaking and writing. The text outlined the two different overarching goals for reading and listening (for a purpose or for entertainment), as well as the different strategies for understanding context. Some of the different strategies included scanning, skimming, and detailed/concentrated reading. The unit also touched on the pros and cons of pre-teaching vocabulary, and a compromise between too much help and too little. The unit then proceeded to cover how to create interest through topic choice, effective comprehension tasks, and finally an example of patchwork ESA receptive skills lesson.
