I learn in unit 13 that though pronunciation is probably the most neglected aspect of English language teaching, it is important to master it well as it brings about accuracy and clarity in communication. In this chapter, I learn about stress, rhythm, intonation and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Intonation carries a message in a sentence and is important in questioning, agreeing or disagreeing, confirming statements, and is also necessary in the expression of emotions or feelings. Stress is the principal emphasis in a sentence and a sentence is emphasized with stressed words. The phonemic alphabet is also a vital part in the learning of English pronunciation as this skill makes a learner able to accurately pronounce any word in the dictionary.
