Although I have taught for two years, some of the subtle reasons behind why teachers do what they do escape me. Even when I ask, the reasons are not always clear or concrete. Varying seating would be very effective when teaching much larger classes, once I learn the students' names and personalities. I definitely played the dominance game at first, as I teach only teenage boys. However, that becomes less effective without administrative backup. Also, in other Western countries the challenge from an elder doesn't scare them as much. So evolving to a presentation of the rules and consequences naturally leads to devising consequences that are effective and enforceable. The teacher must keep in mind to punish behavior, and never berate the student themselves.
