This unit holds that in order to acquire new language, one has to be exposed to it, understand its meaning, its construction and be able to speak it. (This statement may seem common sense, but its meaning would not be entirely understood in, say, an Asian language school setting.) Furthermore, the unit makes a case for viewing and practicing language teaching under these three aspects: grammar, vocabulary and language functions; a language function being the contextual use of language in different walks of life and social settings, e.g. invitations, refusals, social mixers, etc.
Last but not least the unit advocates the idea of introducing and/or focusing on one area alone per lesson and suggests that ESA methods be applied according to the guidelines given.
