Conditional speech is mostly indicated with 'if' or 'when' and it is describing some kind of possibility or hypothetical for the past, present or future. There are five ways of using the conditional and there are a lot of rules, so it is important to slowly work through all the various ways of using it and to allow students as much practice with it as possible. Reported speech is used by informing a third party what someone is doing based on what that person said they were doing. The pronoun and verb tense are adapted to make sense when someone's words are being reported to a third party- like conditional, it can be confusing, must be taken slow when being taught to a non-native English speaker, and must be applied to realistic situation with ample practice.
